Dry eyes or digital eye strain got you down? Did you know there are ways to get relief from the comfort of your own home?
First things first — what is dry eye?
The Mayo Clinic says it’s one of the most common eye health complaints today, especially as screen time continues to rise. If you’ve ever felt burning, stinging, or gritty eyes after a long day at the computer, you’ve experienced some of the symptoms.
Digital Eye Strain
The Mayo Clinic defines digital eye strain as a common condition that “occurs when your eyes get tired from intense use, such as staring at computer screens and other digital devices.”
We asked our Dr. Drew Casey about what he recommends for daily relief. "The Refresh Digital is a little bit thicker of a drop but it's good for digital eye strain as well," Dr. Casey said. "This one is preserved and as long as you're using it less than four times a day."
If you feel you need a little extra relief, that’s where some other options come into play. "The Blink Drops which come in the blue bottle, maybe you've seen that, come with what's called a vanishing preservative in them. While it's in the bottle the preservative in it," Dr. Casey said. "While it's in the bottle, when you take it out and put it in your eye, even if you're inside you have ambient sunlight. It's denatured by the light So the preservative, once it gets on the eye, it dissipates."
Why Preservative-Free Matters
Why should you look at whether the drops are preservative or preservative free? Dr. Casey says, "The issues with preservatives is they can be really irritating and people could have allergies to that. So by having this vanishing preservative, it's essentially a preservative free drop."
Don’t Forget Hot Compresses
It’s not just about drops though — there’s another key way you can help your eyes. "What I find is really underudilized here, especially in the desert, are these hot compresses," Dr. Casey said. "These are microwavable masks, that we put in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. It warms up those eyelids there and gets the oil onto the front part of the eye and stops the tears from evaporating."
