Contact Lenses for your kids

A new school year means your kids are looking for a new clothes, shoes and everything else--including eyewear. If your kids have been asking about getting contacts, we have some tips from Dr. Drew Casey.

What advice would you give parents whose children are interested in wearing contacts for the first time?

Dr. Casey: "It really does depend from person to person when contacts are good. Usually if you can trust a kid to take care of them, because it is a medical device that you're putting in your eye. Something that needs to be cleaned, taken care of. Usually girls are a little bit better than boys, so usually after the age of 11 is typically the earliest I'll do."

Which type of contact lenses do you recommend for kids trying them for the first time?

"Having daily lenses is the easiest, you take them out, you don't have to worry about solution. When you do the weekly or the monthly lenses, they sit in that solution and if you don't change them out properly you put yourself at risk of an eye infection."

When should I schedule an eye exam for my child?
"The biggest issue with kids doing well in school is their vision, so even if you feel like 'I think my kid sees fine,' bring them in at least every two years. That's what the AOA recommends for kids who don't wear glasses and kids who do wear glasses every year. That vision does change quite a bit so lets get them in for that yearly exam."
